Natural Life Extension Therapy

There are certain things a person can do, based upon exacting principles of science, which will greatly improve both the length and quality of life a person has. Many of the principles we'll cite in articles will involve lifestyle: those are the daily choices you make in what activities you do and what foods you eat, and what safe supplements you use to improve and increse your lifetime.

Alpha (not beta) Carotene Levels are Asociated with Greater Longevity

From a 14 year study of 15,318 patients, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, November 22nd 2010: Researchers looked at Alpha Carotene and human longetivity. For years, beta carotene was 'associated' or thought to be associated with longevity: and from there sprung a massive dollar-grabbing 'health' supplement market of beta carotene, but few people benefited from the supplements. This study proves there is no benefit from beta carotene, in the form of human longevity!

Alpha Carotene showed a 29% reduction in cardiovascular mortality and a greater 43% reduction in all cancers and cancer death! The higher the alpha carotene consumption, the higher the benefits in the study. All cause mortality was reduced by 39% for those with the highest regular alpha carotene consumption (those with greater than or equal to 9 micrograms per deciliter (blood levels) as compared to those with 0 to1 microgram/ deciliter of alpha carotene).

Medicine, for years, has tried to 'lower' homocystine death risk with beta carotene: the attempts failed (high blood levels of homocystine are associated with much higher risk for cardiovascular death). Prior 'observational' studies had credited beta carotene with health benefits: these studies were flawed and wrong. From the details of the current study, it appears that the credit for health benefits attributed to beta-carotene were due instead to alpha-carotene.

Foods high in Alpha Carotene

The following 'orange/yellow/red' and 'green' veggies are associated with moderate to higher levels of alpha carortene. Orange/yellow/red veggies include: pumpkin, carrots, squash, red peppers, pimento, and sweet potato. 'Green' veggies high in alpha carotene are: green beans, green peas, broccoli, spinach, leafy lettuce, collard greens and turnip greens.

The main fruit with a moderate level of alpha carotene is cantaloupe melon.

Certain types of vegetable drinks will have many of these vegetables, and would be a 'quick' choice for increasing alpha carotene, and would sure beat out a high fructose soda as a smarter choice of beverage!

Hopefully, readers of this study will conclude, wisely, that it's the whole veggies, and not just the alpha carotene which provides the benefits. Doing this we'll avoid a number of 'money grabbing' supplement makers from taking advantage of people who should instead 'go to the source' and as mom would say, 'just eat your fruit and vegetables' and you'll be healthier! So, call up your mom, and tell her she was right!

Why 'Jumping to Conclusions' Should Not be Your Major Form of Exercise- IF you Want to Have a Longer and Healthier Life!

Many Americans are down right lazy! They use "Jumping to Conclusions" as their major form of exercise, as long as it does not mean actually getting up off the couch, while watching television, unless it's to get something to eat. That REALLY needs to change- for the better.

Regular exercise: improves blood pressure, improves insulin sensitivity, reduces lipids (bad cholesterol and triglycerides), reduces markers of inflammation (hs-crp), and reduces abdominal fat. A team of researchers from Germany also report that exercise slows cellular aging, and prolongs life!

The length of telomeres- the strands of DNA at the tips of chromosomes- regulate cellular aging. As your cells reproduce, the telomeres can shorten or lengthen. The cells throughout the body will have similar lengths to their telomeres, and if enough of the cells die and do not reproduce, you also die! This critical function of telomeres- the control of cellular aging- was honored with a Nobel Prize in 2009!

The researchers proved that in age matched controls (people who exercise versus people who do not, but are the same age), the athletes, whether age 20 or age 51, had higher activity of the chemistry that preserves telomere length; possessed longer telomeres; and lived longer, healthier lives!

In another study, published in JAMA in January 2010,  the use of pharmaceutical grade EPA/DHA (2 grams taken 2x/day), the Omega-3 Fatty Acids found in 'fish oil', caused telomeres to lengthen. Teleomere length is a measure of cellular aging: the longer the telomere, the less likely a cell is to die, or to develop cancer. Combining 2 grams of EPA/DHA twice a day with 30 minutes of exercise on most days would result in a longer and healthier life!

Please note: 2 grams of 'fish oil' is not the same as 2 grams of EPA/DHA. There are two types of 'fish oil': 1) Pharmaceutical grade and, 2) 'junk oil' grade. Pharmaceutical grade 'fish oil' has 2,000 mg (2 grams) of EPA/DHA in 2 capsules. One local supermarket advertises their 'great sale' price on 'fish oil' claiming: in 2 capusules there's '2 grams of fish oil'. That much is true- it is also deceptive. In their two capsules there's only 300mg of EPA/DHA. That would mean a person would need to take 14 capsules twice a day to get 2 grams of EPA/DHA: that would be two entire 'meals' of capsules! The 'great price' isn't so 'great' when taking 28 capsules a day! Talk with us about how to get the benefits of pharmaceutical grade EPA/DHA Omega 3 Fatty Acids to get these life extending opportunities! A longer and healthier life- now that's a great plan you deserve!

A healthy activity plan, for 2011, is a plan that will help us all. The only way to have a healthy life and one with less illness and injury, is to have a better plan. Consider the wise advice above, and get some more activity into your day- stop by and we can work with you in making a simple but very effective plan which will help you!

Excess Cancer Risk With Shorter Telomeres

The progressive shortening of telomere length, with each cell division, is behind cellular aging and death. A study published in the British medical journal, Lancet, in 2007, showed that people with shorter telomeres are at a greater risk for developing heart disease and stroke. Is there also a higher risk of cancer with shorter telomeres?

From the JAMA, July 2010, in a study done in a single Italian town, researchers looked at 1,000 people who were cancer free (aged 40-79). They next measured their telomeres and followed this group for 10 years.

Compared with those people who had the longest telomeres, those people with shorter telomeres had two to three times the risk for developing cancer! These same people were also more likely to die from the cancer!

So, there's more proof: longer telomeres increase lifespan and overall health. Shorter telomeres increase death from heart attack, stroke, and various cancers. We know, for certain, that regular activity will lengthen telomeres, and that EPA/DHA taken as 2 grams 2x/day will lengthen telomeres. We now have two very good, very smart choices to act on that will reduce suffering and improve quality of life. Lets do both, for the new year, and get the rest of the family involved in doing the right thing also!

An 85% Ruduction in ALL Colds and ALL Flu Without a 'Flu' Shot

In a Sweedish study, they looked at the persons with the highest risk of infecting others: those sweet angelic children between the ages of 2 and 6 years old. The little vectors of infection: the curtain climbers, rug rats and linoleum lizards in day care settings.

The 1st group received no treatment, and was sick with whatever went around for the entire year. The second group received a single pro-biotic, and 60% of the time did not get sick: that's a huge improvement.

The 3rd group of kids received 2 pro-biotics and 85% of the time did not have any illness for the year long period. It's about time that "American Medicine" became positive and focused upon pro-active reasonable things we can do that will keep us well. Pro-biotics do just that- they keep us well. Its feeding our bodies with 'the good guys'.

About 80% of the immune system (that keeps us healthy) is in the gut. We can have 'whatever' in our gut, or we can have really healthy bacteria that will keep us healthy 85% of the time we'd otherwise be sick.

The 'whatever' choice is what most Americans choose (from not knowing the facts). Our healthcare system uses: anti-biotics, anti-fungals, anti-diabetic agents, anti-hypertensive drugs. Anti-, anti-- it's about time we Americans became pro-active and used pro-biotics. There are many pro-biotics on the market, any one of them that has 2 or more probiotics will give you the benefits described. We like Dan Active- it's available in most stores, it tastes good (like a malted milk shake) and it's a very smart thing to do before bed each night-we do sleep better knowing we've done an incredibly smart thing before going to sleep, (no, we don't own Dan Active stock: we just buy the product and use it like many smart people do).

Get started on the same smart track and you'll sleep better and 85% of the time won't get sick! It's about time!

The 'Other' Human Genome: Healthy GI Bacteria

From another great article in the journal Science, May 2010: While our own medical director spent 27 years in our country's uniform, we're talking about a different GI here! Gut bacteria, or gastro-intestinal (GI) bacteria make up a majority of body weight and mass in the gut.

In fact:  9 out of 10 cells in and on our body belong to 'friendly' bacteria! By weight we're mostly water and bacteria-- something you'd never tell a girl on your first date! But then, so is she! That means each of us is colonized inside and out by microorganisms.

If our fellow 'travelers' followed us without any effects on our health, their presence would be of no concern. However, from the studies above, we know that we can prevent 85% of all colds and flu with a collection of 'healthy' bacteria in our gut, versus a collection of 'whatever' bacteria. In fact, we've known for some time that bacteria affect our health, but a few points have slowed the pace of discussion.

First: there's not alot of money to be made in 'preventing' disease. So, preventing 85% of all colds and flu is not a financial incentive to big pharmaceutical companies and hospitals who profit when people are sick. Second: private medical practices 'lose money' when they don't see 'sick' patients (except at Adobe where we strongly encourage you and your family to take probiotics!). Finally, many Americans are not 'moved' or 'motivated' to change from habits of doing nothing positive to promote good health: they don't see the benefits, and while sick focus on 'just getting better' for 'now'.

Science is great and exciting! Bacteria could care less how motivated or apathetic Americans are. Gut bacteria produce molecules which travel through gut and liver circulation and breach or break through gut barriers: these molecules include 'good guys' such as anti-inflammatory factors, pain relieving compounds, antioxidants and vitamins. Toxins, or poisons produced by the gut also leak out and can cause serious disease. Some of these toxins have been associated with obesity, cancer, and diabetes (as documented in the journal Nature 2006, page 1027).

Since it would be 'nice' to know which bacteria are causing the: obesity, cancer, and diabetes, a huge international effort, the Human Microbiome Consortium, is under way to sequence all of the genes of the bacteria which have 100 times the genes we possess and which live in the human gut. So far 178 of the roughly 1,000 bacteria have been genetically sequenced. So, what can be done until we identify the 'really bad' bacteria causing obesity, cancer, and diabetes?

To know our 'friendly' gut bacteria, we must identify friend from foe: this huge scientific study should do the job. In the meantime, we need to follow the very simple and wise counsel to continue to consume a daily amount of 2 or more probiotics to keep our gut bacteria on the 'friendly' side: all of the available science promotes and encourages this wise choice. Continue to have a small container of Danactive (or a similar product with 2 or more probiotics) each evening before bed time: Danactive contains 3 probiotics, is available in almost every dairy case, and tastes 'good', so you'll be more likely to remember to take it!

Think of this each evening: have a probiotic that tastes good, is good for you, and you'll have 85% less colds and flu-- what a sweet thought before going to sleep each night!

Control Risks to Prevent Stroke

From the British medical journal, Lancet, a worldwide study of 3,000 patients, from 22 countries, from 6 continents; both developing and developed countries included, confirm many long standing wise and safe practices which both prevent stroke and heart attack.

That does not surprise many well read health care providers, who for the last few years have began to call a 'stroke' a 'brain attack', just as a heart attack' is thus called. In other words, if the blood clot goes to the heart, or if it goes to the brain, tissue damage occurs. It's the same process and involves the same risk factors.

Neuroimaging was performed to determine the type of stroke: 78% were ischemic (blood clot closed off blood supply to the brain) and hemorrhagic (blood vessel burst and bled into the brain.)

Modifiable risk factors were identified to prevent stroke: high blood pressure (hypertension), smoking, low waist-to-hip-ratio (fat around the belly), unhealthy diet, lack of regular exercise, diabetes, moderate or high alcohol intake, stress or depression, and a high ratio of apoB to apoA1 lipoprotein (cholesterol) accounted for 90% of the worldwide risk for stroke.

High blood pressure alone, accounted for 52% of the risk for any stroke, and 74% of the risk for hemorrhagic stroke. You can, and need to make some very smart choices, and take better care of yourself this year. You deserve to feel better, and your family needs you to be around, and to be in better shape. Time to come in for that 'check-up' you've wanted to do for the new year! We can do this together! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Tai Chi Relieves Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

From the New England Journal of Medicine: August 19th 2010: At Tufts University, a group of 66 Fibromyalgia patients were randomized to Tai Chi twice weekly for 12 weeks, with daily home exercises, or 1 hour 'standard' classes on coping stratagies, diet, nutrition and exercise.

After 12 weeks, the Tai Chi group had significant improvements in overall pain relief, improved sleep, resolution of depression, improved exercise capacity, and overall improved functional capacity.

The relative improvement of Tai Chi, beat out 'standard' drug therapies, and had no side effects. Unfortunately, the study had its' detractors.

Detractors (living in Ivory Towers) claimed the study was only at one center, and for valid and improved statistical analysis, over 600 patients would need to be evaluated, from at least 3 centers. While the detractors have the scientific principal correct: the detractors live in 'Ivory Towers'. There is no large pool of funds waiting around to pay for evaluating Tai Chi- a non-contact martial art which can not be 'patented' and sold.

Our experience with patients taking Tai Chi: it relieves nearly every pain symptom, and improves sleep, overall well-being, and improves self discipline. There are no 'drug side effects' because there is no 'drug'.  This study confirms: it's time Western medicine incorporates Eastern discipline in treating patients to achieve the best outcomes.

Vitamin 'E' to Prevent Stroke, Instead Increases Stroke Risk!

For years, Vitamin E was regarded as preventing cancer, then several years ago, in controlled trials Vitamin E was found to INCREASE cancer risk. The same type of situation has again occurred, only with stroke and Vitamin E.

From an article in the British Medical Journal, November 4th 2010: there are two types of stroke: Ischemic- where a blood clot forms and blocks blood flow to a part of the brain causing a stroke (brain damage), but not necessarily causing death; and a Hemorrhagic Stroke, whereby a vessel ruptures in the brain, and the brain is thus deprived of blood flow, and death soon occurs.

In this study of 119,000 people, Vitamin E risk for Ischemic stroke was decreased by 10%; HOWEVER risk for Hemorrhagic stroke (the one causing death) was 22% higher in the Vitamin E group.

Takehome Message: Vitamin E supplements increase overall stroke and heart attack risk. This 'vitamin' taken in supplement form hastens death and does nothing more than lighten your wallet in the meantime. Don't waste your money and risk your health based upon less than thorough studies from decades ago. There have been NEWER studies in the past decade that identify Vitamin E as dangerous, and not helpful, as prior, smaller and older studies had claimed.

Fix Low Vitamin D Levels Prior to Orthopedic Surgery!

From the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, 2010, pages 2300-2304: nearly half of all persons undergoing orthopedic procedures go into the operating room with abnormally low amounts of vitamin D which WILL harm their chance of having a good outcome from the surgery! Setting up a patient to fail from surgery 50% of the time is unacceptable!

Many doctors (read orthopedic surgeons) continue to doubt the critical importance of Vitamin D in healing from orthopedic surgery. It seems that, although these physicians understand what elements are required to form or to heal bone, they focus on the 'gee-whiz' technology aspects of care and forget, or ignore the basic facts of science.

You now know the numbers. If you or a family member are going for orthopedic surgery, be sure to stop by Adobe Family Practice, first, for a Vitamin D check-up. If you have an 'emergency' repair of a broken bone, you can bet about 98% that you'll be low and need vitamin D treatment also. We're your 'safety zone' for helping you and your family to heal. See you soon!

Diabetic Drug (Metformin) Stops Prostate Cancer Growth by 50%!

This is the first article we've posted, 'directly', which shows where the abstrct came from, who authored it, when it was written, and the scientific 'talk' of the article. All of that is interesting, however, if a person were to understand the background science, you'd understand that the scientific messengers they've identified in this study are very significant. Many drugs are 'FDA approved' showing a 5-10% reduction in cancer or tumor growth, with those claims being called 'significant' in the media, and we'd hear about them for months or years. Hitting DU145, PC-3, LNCaP, cyclin D1, pRb and p27kip are significant findings (50%). Inhibiting the AMPK pathway, and still having the anti-growth effect on prostate cancer at the 50% level is huge!

Nobody's talking about these huge findings because the medication 'Metformin' is generic. If you have no insurance, you can get a 90 day supply at Walmart for $10.00! Because 'big pharma' is not making billions over this huge discovery, you probably will not hear about this significant finding, unless you read it here. Metformin is available by prescription only.

Metformin is a widely used antidiabetic agent, which regulates glucose homeostasis through inhibition of liver glucose production and an increase in muscle glucose uptake. Recent studies suggest that metformin may reduce the risk of cancer, but its mode of action in cancer remains not elucidated. We investigated the effect of metformin on human prostate cancer cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Metformin inhibited the proliferation of DU145, PC-3 and LNCaP cancer cells with a 50% decrease of cell viability and had a modest effect on normal prostate epithelial cell line P69. Metformin did not induce apoptosis but blocked cell cycle in G0/G1. This blockade was accompanied by a strong decrease of cyclin D1 protein level, pRb phosphorylation and an increase in p27kip protein expression. Metformin activated the AMP kinase pathway, a fuel sensor signaling pathway. However, inhibition of the AMPK pathway using siRNA against the two catalytic subunits of AMPK did not prevent the antiproliferative effect of metformin in prostate cancer cells. Importantly, oral and intraperitoneal treatment with metformin led to a 50 and 35% reduction of tumor growth, respectively, in mice bearing xenografts of LNCaP. Similar, to the in vitro study, metformin led to a strong reduction of cyclin D1 protein level in tumors providing evidence for a mechanism that may contribute to the antineoplastic effects of metformin suggested by recent epidemiological studies.
